How Long Can I Pretend

I found these words by myself
So I'll just write them all down while you sleep
And lay them beside you, heavy and sweet
So you'll wake to the impression of me
Are we just fooling ourselves
With every word that we speak?
Well you promised me once that we weren't a mistake
Like I promised you once I would stay

But I can't hold you the way I used to
It can't be the way it's been
I know in time I'll learn to miss you
But that won't will my heart to mend

Do you recognize yourself
In old photographs and stories?
Are you there in the background moving the scene
Like a parlor trick through a smoke screen?
And I fall for it every time
It used to be so much easier to believe
That the mask that you wore for everyone to see
Was the same that you wore for me

But I can't hold you the way I used to
I won't stay just to watch it end
I know in time I'll learn to miss you
But how long can I pretend?

You want it to be simple
But time won't do it
Time won't help you let go of the past
Maybe there's time to get it back
